Fairphone presents mobile phone made with sustainable and ethical materials
Fairphone 3 is made from conflict free region materials with a focus on repairability and recyclability. Three years after the launch of its latest martphone, Fairphone announced Fairphone 3, its latest attempt at a sustainable smartphone. The new device aims to deliver on its promise to be easy to repair and made from responsibly sourced, conflict-free and recycled materials. The company is betting on a world with durable and repairable phones, significantly reducing its CO2 emissions.
According to the company, the third generation model is easy to repair due to its construction in seven modules. The approach is similar to that used on its previous smartphone, the 2016 Fairphone 2, which achieved a repairability score of 10/10 on iFixit, a company that traditionally disassembles cell phones and other electronics. However, the company struggled to offer long term repairs to its past products. In 2017 they decided to discontinue support for the 2013 Fairphone 1 after considering that they could no longer afford to continue producing spare parts.
In this third device, Fairphone sought to use the most ethical materials possible. Tin and tungsten used in construction are conflict free, gold is Fairtrade and copper and plastics are recycled. The company is also improving the supply of cobalt, an ingredient in lithium-ion batteries, which are typically extracted under conditions that violate human rights. She is also working to improve the health, safety and pay of factory employees.
Due to its focus on making a smartphone more sustainable than high-tech, the Fairphone 3 doesn't hit the market as competitively as other flagships we've seen this year. It has a 5.7 inch Full HD screen, a 12 megapixel rear camera and an 8 megapixel front camera. The phone is built around a Snapdragon 632 processor and has 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. The 3,000 mAh battery is removable, allowing you to replace it as capacity begins to run low.
Fairphone 3 will be available in stores from September 3 for the suggested price of 450 euros. The company also said that customers who bought and recycled previous products will be rewarded with buying the new model in some countries.
